Janna moved to Denver from Baltimore eight months ago. Here’s her perspective on being Black in Denver.

What does it mean to you to be Black in Denver?

Coming from Baltimore, it has been quite an adjustment. Denver is a vibrant, growing city but there is still a lack of racial diversity. That being said, Denver is very open-minded and there is a Black community here, it just requires effort to find. With the help of social media, I have been able to find yoga classes and concerts and bookstores for us. With the growth of Denver, I look forward to seeing the Black community continue to make an impact on the city.

What do you love most about living in Denver?

Denver is continuously growing, and a great result of that is there is always something to do. Within the city, you can find art shows, concerts, and festivals going on daily. The best part of Denver is that amid this excitement, there are surrounding mountains and parks to escape to for a peaceful retreat.

How have your experiences in Denver shaped you as a creative, entrepreneur, professional, etc.?

Denver has beautiful street art, which is a constant creative inspiration. On a warm day, it is a great city to explore new murals tucked in random alleys. Professionally, Denver is the city that inspired me to transition into a career in real estate. My goal is to work in architectural design, but I’ve found a great opportunity in real estate. I’ve been able to learn a lot from the boom Denver is in right now.
