Ali • Owner, Urban Sanctuary

Ali Duncan is a life coach, intuitive healer, and the owner of Urban Sanctuary, a boutique yoga and wellness studio in the heart of 5 Points. She is passionate about supporting those who are looking for a sanctuary of healing and acceptance, and for those who want to share their gifts and express themselves in a safe space. Ali’s experience begins on a farm in Fort Collins, where she was born and raised. Here’s what it means to Ali to be Black in Denver.

What does it mean to you to be Black in Denver?

I was born and raised on a farm in Fort Collins, so living in Denver is like being in the big city to me and with way more diversity than where I grew up. To be a Black business owner in Denver brings me so much pride. I feel like I’m on an island, sometimes secluded and sometimes surrounded by like-minded people. I love offering my gifts to the community and seeing who shows up to be a part of it. Being Black in Denver gives me more reach to more people and more opportunities to connect with and support the Black community.

What do you love most about living in Denver?

I love the size of Denver and how certain communities make it feel small. I love being in the middle of downtown with all the activities and restaurants. I enjoy walking or riding my bike, taking my grandkids to the park or to one of the many events that are available in Denver.

How have your experiences in Denver shaped you as an entrepreneur?

Owning one of the few spaces that support and promote POC classes has given me a sense of purpose, connection, and pride.
